Condition-monitoring alerts ranked by an expert so teams act on the right ones
Added 2026-10-14
Role
reliability engineer, maintenance manager
The problem
Monitoring systems that send every anomaly as an alert create alert fatigue: maintenance teams cannot tell which warnings threaten production, so real problems are ignored with the noise. A North American engineered-wood producer wanted to cut unplanned failures across 15 plants without burying its teams in alerts.
Step by step
- List critical assets and the production impact of each one failing; this sets alert priority.
- Agree with the vendor or your reliability engineer on severity levels and response times.
- Send only reviewed, prioritised alerts to the team; review the rest weekly.
- Turn each alert into a CMMS work order with diagnosis and action.
- Document every save and every false alarm.
- Expand site by site once savings are documented.
Tools
- AssetWatch (sensors, AI and condition-monitoring engineers, CMMS integration): used at the wood producer
- Others: Augury, Tractian, Waites, SKF
Result
Engineered-wood and plywood producer (anonymous, 15 facilities), AssetWatch: in a six-month proof of concept, 11 faults fixed before failure and $113,000 documented savings, including a $74,000 boiler-pump bearing save; now deployed at all 15 facilities with 130+ downtime risks resolved, $2M+ savings and an ongoing 5x ROI, 3M+ data points analysed (AssetWatch case study, a vendor claim).
As reported by the source; most figures are vendor or self-reported and not independently verified.
Human review: cautions
- Anonymous vendor case study; savings are estimated.
- Human review is part of the result; pure AI alerts may be noisier.
- Priority must reflect production impact, not only fault severity.
Try it yourself
You are a reliability engineer. I will paste this week's condition-monitoring alerts (asset, fault, severity) and an asset list with criticality and production impact. 1. Rank alerts by production risk. 2. For the top 5, give recommended action and deadline. 3. List alerts that can wait and why. 4. Flag assets alerting repeatedly.
